The Weekend Stream – 7/31/2015

The weekend is here and it is time to present the latest edition of The Weekend Stream, B&E’s top weekend picks for titles currently streaming on Netflix!

  1. Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp – Seriously, watch this Netflix original series based on the cult classic film. It is presented here with the full original cast plus a ton of great cameos. This is not only the hottest title of the week, but a show that I have been eagerly anticipating for quite some time.
  2. Top Secret! – A funny cult classic starring Val Kilmer in an unforgettable role. From the creators of Airplane!
  3. The Guest – I don’t know how many times I have recommended this film, but it is not getting the traction that it deserves. It is a stylish, violent thriller from Adam Wingard, the director of You’re Next.
  4. Starship Troopers – Human beings are pitted against giant bugs in one of my favorite sci-fi films of all time. The sequels never really lived up to the potential shown in this film.
  5. Sorority Row – This remake of the House on Sorority Row was panned by critics, and while some of this criticism is well-deserved, I found this film to be a slasher worthy of checking out even though it was a bit cheesy.
  6. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer – Watch Michael Rooker chew up scenery in this serial killer classic. Be warned though that the film feels like it goes a bit too far in a few places. It is dangerous, raw, gritty, and provocative.
  7. Honeymoon – Witness a newlywed couple torn apart by a mystery that dwells in a secluded cabin in the forest and causes the bride to sleepwalk and act increasingly belligerent. Can the groom solve the mystery before it costs them their marriage and possibly their lives?
  8. Antiviral – Brandon Cronenberg directs this film that satirizes the cultural obsession with celebrities by utilizing the body-horror that made his father, David Cronenberg, such an iconic figure.
  9. Maniac – Elijah Wood stars in this nasty little film that employs a very unique first-person perspective. It is violent and hyper-stylized but a great film if you can stomach it.
  10. Knights of Badassdom – Peter Dinklage and Steve Zahn star in this comedy as a couple of LARP-playing knights that try to take on pure evil.
